Importance of General Wellness Exams
If you’re like most pet owners, the safety and well-being of your pet is a top priority. Whether you have recently gotten a new puppy or kitten or you’ve had your pet for several years, general wellness exams are an important part of their well-being. Here are just a few of the reasons why it’s important to schedule routine wellness exams with our veterinarians at Westside Veterinary Center on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
What to Expect
Although each visit to the veterinarian for wellness exams will vary, there are certain things that you can expect at one or all of the visits, including:
- Vaccine updates
- Full-physical examination
- Check for fleas and ticks and prescribe prevention
- Discuss your pet’s diet
- De-worming puppies and kittens
- Test for parasites
- Discuss spaying or neutering
Questions and Concerns
During a wellness exam, you will have a chance to talk with the veterinarian about any questions and concerns you may have. This may include topics such as potty training, behavioral tips, changes in diet, or concerns you may have about potential illnesses your breed of pet may be susceptible to.
The wellness exam is the ideal opportunity to keep your veterinarian updated on your pet’s health and behaviors. As pets age, they may develop conditions that require additional care, such as arthritis. This can also mean that as your pets age, you may need to bring them to an animal hospital more often to make sure that your pet is well taken care of. During the exam, your veterinarian will also have the opportunity to discuss any findings from previous tests or physical exams. Be sure to let your veterinarian know if your pet has been experiencing anything unusual, such as biting, scratching or chewing at their skin. This is also the perfect time to address any concerns about your pet’s diet.
